The REPORT procedure incorrectly generates the following error when a user-defined format that is associated with a column in the input data set cannot be found:

ERROR: Unable to find or load format name for item ERROR:  An exception has
       been encountered.
Please contact technical support and provide them with the following
       traceback information:

The SAS task name is [REPORT  ]
Segmentation Violation

The correct error message that should be generated follows:

ERROR: Unable to find or load format FMTNAME for item variable.

To circumvent the problem, ensure that the format definitions for all of the variables in the input data set are available when PROC REPORT runs.
